The Salary for this position will be prorated from the start date for the 19-20 SY.

 

To supervise and coordinate the activities and operations of the Athletics/Activities section within the Office of Instruction Services including interscholastic, intramural, and elementary extracurricular programs; to coordinate assigned activities with other divisions, departments and outside agencies; and to provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Assistant Superintendent - Instruction Services.  

 

Supervision Received and Exercised

 

Receives general direction from the Assistant Superintendent - Instruction Services.

 

Exercises direct supervision over clerical staff.

 

Assists in Evaluation of Head Coaches.

 

Essential Function StatementsEssential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinate and monitor the organization, staffing and operational activities for the services and activities of the Athletics/Activities section including varsity and sub-varsity programs, intramural/extramural programs, school sponsored activities, athletic and activity transportation, promotion of extracurricular activities and requisition of athletic supplies.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for assigned programs; recommend and implement resulting policies and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identify resource needs; review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
  • Direct, coordinate and review the work plan for coaching and facilities maintenance staff; assign work activities and projects; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Monitor, schedule, and recommend improvements to athletic fields, and gymnasiums and equipment at all District schools.
  • Schedule athletic programs at six District high school sites; direct, coordinate and monitor activities scheduled at Gallup High Schools.
  • Coordinate intramural/extramural programs at seven middle schools.
  • Supervise school sponsored activities and elementary school sports programs.
  • Coordinate athletic passes, sale of game tickets and printing of schedule posters.
  • Secure requisitions and formulate specifications for major athletic supplies and equipment bids.
  • Sponsor New Mexico State Championship events in cross country and softball and host NCAA rules clinics for all District coaches and neighboring school districts.
  • Assist principals in hiring, evaluating and assessing Head Coaches.
  • Select, train, motivate and evaluate program personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
  • Participate in the development and administration of the division's annual athletic budget; forecast funds needed for staffing, equipment, materals, and supplies; monitor and approve expnditures; recommend adjustments as necessary.
  • Investigates and implements alternative funding programs to support interscholastic athletics; prepares and submits finanical reports as required by the District.
  • Serve as the liaison for the Athletics/Activities section with other schools, agencies and the New Mexico Activities Association; negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues.
  • Coordinate program activities with those of other divisions and outside agencies and organizations; coordinates the use of athletic and school facilities with principals.
  • Serve as primary contact for maintenance crews working on athletic fields, gymnasiums and facilities. Arranges for ancillary services at athletic events including ushers, parking and ecurity.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of interscholastic, intramural and elementary extracurricular programs.
  • Monitor student eligibility and safety procedures.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualification Requirements

 

Knowledge of:

  • Operational characteristics, services and activities of a school district athletics and activities program.
  • Athletic programs, coaches, and participant needs.
  • Principles and practices of program planning and preparation.
  • Methods and techniques of athletic program supervision.
  • Athletic equipment manufacturers, equipment saftey considerations and quality of goods.
  • Principles and practices of school district budget preparation and administration.
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

 Ability to: 

  • Coordinate a comprehensive school district athletic and activities programs.
  • Coordinate a wide spectrum of extracurricular, interscholastic, and intremural events with local administrators.
  • Effectively speak in public.
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff.
  • Participate in the development and administration of division goals, objectives and procedures.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Experience and Training Guidelines:  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Experience:

Four years of responsible athletic and activities program coordination experience including one year of teaching and supervisory responsibility is desired.

 

Education:

Equivalent to a Bachlor degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a related field.

 

Licensure:

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain certification as a Coaches Licensure Instructor.

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain certification as a Coach.

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an New Mexico Teachers' License from the State of New Mexico Department of Education.
