HVAC Technicians (Re-Advertise)

 

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in

the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

 

Summary

To perform the full range of duties as assigned including the installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC systems and refrigeration units

 

Distinguishing Characteristics

HVAC Technician I-- This is the entry level class in the HVAC series. This class is distinguished from the

HVAC Technician II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including assisting in the repair and replacement of HVAC and Refrigeration units. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

HVAC Technician II -- This is the full journey level class within the HVAC series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the HVAC Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the building, repairing and installation of roof systems.

Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience.

HVAC Technician III-This is the advanced journey level class within the HVAC Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the HVAC Technician I and II by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including lead worker responsibilities, and overseeing the work of lower level positions. Employees at this level receive only general instructions or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are normally filled by advancement from the II level through competitive selection, or when filled from the outside, have prior lead worker experience.

 

Supervision Received and Exercised

HVAC Technician I

Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff.

HVAC Technician II

Receives general supervision from higher level staff.

HVAC Technician III

Receives Direction from Higher level staff.

 

Essential Function Statements - Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Identify and locate roof leaks, source of leak and potential damage.
  2. Maintain and repair roofs on teacherage and schools, including portable classrooms

Qualifications

Knowledge of;

Basic principles and practices of HVAC and Refrigeration.

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Basic mathematical principles.

 

Ability to:

Learn applicable building codes and regulations.

Learn to operate power and hand tools and other HVAC equipment.

Learn to accurately and correctly apply mathematical principles.

Distinguish and identify the different types of HVAC and refrigeration equipment

Learn to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Learn to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing in the English language.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating

intellectual capabilities.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

 

Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

General HVAC and Refrigeration experience is desirable.

Education:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid New Mexico drivers license.

HVAC Technician II

In addition to the qualifications for HVAC Technician I:

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of HVAC and Refrigeration.

Applicable building codes and regulations.

Ability to:

Accurately interpret and apply established, standard HVAC and Refrigeration guidelines.

Operate power and hand tools and other HVAC equipment.

Accurately and correctly apply mathematical principles.

Perform a wide variety of journey level duties in support of an assigned function.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Two years of HVAC experience including public contact is desirable.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training is desirable.

HVAC Technician III

In addition to the qualifications for HVAC Technician I and II:

Knowledge of:

Operational characteristics, services and activities of a school district facilities HVAC and Refrigeration program.

District policies and procedures.

Ability to:

Perform a wide variety of advanced journey level duties in support of an assigned function.

Accurately interpret and apply layout sketches and blueprints.

Prepare project cost estimates.

Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.

Maintain accurate and complete records.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 Experience:

Four years of HVAC or Refrigeration experience, including public contact

 Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training is preferred.

 

Working Conditions

Environmental Conditions:

Office, shop and warehouse environment, travel from site to site, airborne particles and vibration, and frequently works in outside weather conditions.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate

to heavy carrying, lifting, and pushing; reaching, climbing in high, precarious places, crawling, sitting,

standing and walking for extended periods of time, operation of motor vehicles; and subject to random drug testing.
