McKinley Academy will be open to high school students for the 2018-2019 school year, and it will be located on the UNM Gallup campus.  Academic achievement will be the primary focus of McKinley Academy. Teachers will be supporting students to earn their Associate’s Degree and High School Diploma.

 

To provide a guidance program that provides students with attitudes, knowledge and skills that support school success and establish a strong foundation for promising futures focusing on the academic development and personal/social development of each student based on the American Counseling Association National Standards.  

 

Supervision Received and Exercised

 

Receives general direction from the assigned Principal, or assigned administrator.

 

May exercise technical and functional supervision over clerical staff.

 

Essential Function Statements - Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Implement programs to provide the foundation of personal and social growth that contributes to academic success.
  • Implement strategies and activities that support and maximize student learning, e.g. prepare student for education success by developing, counseling, and implementing goals/plan.
  • Upholds the standards of the counseling profession.
  • Initiate a cultural awareness sensitive for students and parents; identify and counsel with at-risk students.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned and required.
  1. Coordinate activities in the school counseling program, including: Assist school administrators and educators with planning and carrying out school-related programs and events.
  2. Analyze student performance in the classroom to provide guidance and identify potential problems.
  3. Learn students’ names, career objectives and other details so you can better serve them
  4. Help students develop academic plans in accordance with their skills, talents and strengths
  5. Work collaboratively with the school nurse and other supportive staff
  6. Facilitate crisis intervention and prevention programs
  7. Communicate with teachers, parents and administrators on an ongoing basis about behavioral and academic problems
  8. Communicate and exchange information with parents/guardians by way of conferences, parent education workshops and newsletters.
  9. Participate as members of the school improvement and interdisciplinary teams and work as liaisons with parent organizations.
  10. Work with specialized populations and needs that require special attention such as culturally diverse populations and students of various abilities.
  11. [Secondary Schools] Coordinate activities with Career Counselor; performs duties outside of normal school hours, including weekends to accommodate parents.

Qualification Requirements

 

Knowledge of:

  • Operational characteristics, services and activities of a comprehensive school district counseling program.
  • Modern and complex principles and practices of program evaluation.
  • Principles and procedures of grant application and administration.
  • Methods and techniques of career counseling, both individually and in small groups.
  • Principles of school district budget preparation and control.
  • District policies, rules, regulations relative to student advisement.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Local and state educational structure and organization.
  • The manner in which concepts of cultural diversity relate to an understanding of individuality.
  • Educational foundations of a school district, including the organization, administration, funding resources, and record keeping.
  • Cultural diversities of the local area and the traditional Native American beliefs of students and families.

Ability to:

  • Utilize and understand formal assessment instruments, procedures and techniques for evaluation.
  • Understand statistical analysis and evaluation, testing materials and results, counseling and interpersonal relations.
  • Supervise, direct and coordinate the work of lower level staff.
  • Interpret and explain district policies and procedures.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Maintain program records and prepare year end reports.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Handle and maintain the records of students in a confidential manner.
  • Understand and respect the cultural diversities, and Native American traditional beliefs and practices, of students and their families.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including a variety of District and other government officials, community groups and the general public.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Experience and Training Guidelines:  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Preferred Experience and Licensure: 

  • College Advising
  • Testing Coordination
  • Level III Counseling License
  • Level III Teaching License

Location:  UNM Gallup Campus

 

Education:  Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in an accredited program in school counseling, guidance & counseling, psychology, sociology, or a related field.  Candidates must meet the criteria for one of the licensure pathways outlined below for a School Counselor:

Physical Demands:

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the job and are not meant to be all inclusive.  While performing this job the staff member shall:

  • Use strength to lift items needed to perform the functions of the job.
  • Sit, stand and walk for required periods of time.

  • Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools, computers, and/or controls.

In addition, while performing duties of this job, the employee will constantly stand/walk, bend neck and back, use hands for repetitive grasping and pushing/pulling.  The employee is frequently required to use hands for fine manipulation, squat, kneel, knee stand, and push/pull.  The employee will occasionally be required to sit, climb stairs/ladders, lift and reach overhead, crawl, and lift/carry.  The employee must often lift/carry up to 20 pounds and must frequently lift/carry up to 50 pounds.  The employee is occasionally required to push/pull a maximum weight of 10 pounds.

  • Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.
  • Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
  • Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities.
  • Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment.
  • Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.
  • Works near video display
  • The employee is required to properly wear any personal protection equipment supplied by the District.
