TITLE:  EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSTICIAN

CLASSIFICATION:  Ancillary

DEPARTMENT:  Educational Dev. Center (SSC)

WORK HOURS:  7.5

CONTRACT LENGTH:  203 Days

To evaluate and conduct diagnostic services to average, gifted, disabled and disturbed children within the GMCS district and recommends and coordinates corrective educational therapy to reduce or eliminate impairments that interfere with the individual students ability to benefit from the districts educational program

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives general direction from the Special Education Director or assignee.

May exercise technical and functional supervision over supervisory, professional, technical and clerical staff.

Essential Function Statements Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Review referrals of children having or suspected of having learning disabilities, mental retardation, behavioral disorders, or physical disabilities to determine evaluation procedure.
  2. Select, administer, score, and conduct diagnostic tests on students suspected of having developmental and learning disabilities.
  3. Conduct diagnostic studies to identify a child's needs, limitations, and potentials, through classroom observation, studying school records, consulting with parents and school personnel, and administering and interpreting diagnostic findings.
  4. Recommend and coordinate corrective educational therapy as a component of the overall corrective educational program.
  5. Conduct and schedule Individualized Educational Program (IEP) meetings with school personnel, parents and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  6. Serve as a member of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of administrators, school personnel, students and families by conducting and completing assessments, interpreting test results, and developing evaluations for teachers and other members of the team.
  7. Serve as an advocate for students, and plans special placement or other treatment programs.
  8. Make medical referral to outside agencies for further evaluation and possible treatments, as appropriate
  9. Assist in establishing procedures for periodic review and evaluation of school oriented services.
  10. Maintain professional skills through consultations, in service activities, and self-selected professional growth activities.
  11. Maintain an awareness and respect for the cultural diversity of students and their families, and assists district personnel in understanding these variations when planning for students and families.
  12. Maintain confidential individual records for the purpose of making appropriate referrals and for maintaining continuity of service, and in compliance with federal, state and district regulations and policies.

Qualification Requirements

Knowledge of:

Principles and techniques of identifying and diagnosing exceptional learning.

Methods and techniques of administering, scoring and interpreting a variety of diagnostic tests currently accepted   as effective in diagnosing exceptional learning.

Local and state educational structure and organization.

The manner in which concepts of cultural diversity relate to an understanding of individuality.

Educational foundations of a school district, including the organization, administration, funding resources, and   recordkeeping. 

Current state and feral legislation, and district policies regarding identification, evaluation and placement       procedures for children with disabilities.

Cultural diversities of the local rea and the traditional Native American beliefs of students and families.

Ability to:

Identify educational development deficiencies in children.

Plan, coordinate and implement corrective educational plans.

interact effectively with the educational professionals in the District.

Utilize and understand formal assessment instruments, procedures and techniques for evaluation and remediation   of learning disorders.

Understand statistical analysis and evaluation, testing materials and results, counseling and interpersonal relations.

Handle and maintain the records of students in a confidential manner.

Understand and respect the cultural diversities, and Native American traditional beliefs and practices, of students   and their families.

Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.

communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating Intellectual  capabilities.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

three years of related work experience, preferably in a school system.

Education:

Must possess a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Educational Diagnostics, or Master's degree in a related field that included graduate classes in psychometric assessments of both cognitive and academic achievement.

 

Applicants must have MA degree and possess or have ability to obtain a NM teaching license (New Mexico has an alternative licensure program for applicants who possess a BA degree or higher)
